Little Star Baby Boutique - Products

See Them Before You Buy

The main drawback of cloth diapering today is that in many areas, you cannot see the product you want to buy before purchasing. This is the case in Topeka, KS and some surrounding areas. What we do is set up demonstration times where we have all the products we offer for you to see, hold, feel, to help make your choices. Orders can be placed at the demonstration, by mail, phone, e-mail, or at our online boutique. We want to be available to our customers to answer any questions and share any advice we have.

How to Schedule a Demonstration

You can call, e-mail, or contact us through this site if you are interested in scheduling a demonstration. There is no obligation to buy. We will also have some pre-scheduled demonstrations that are open to the public. These will be listed as available.

What is...?

All-In-One

A diaper that has a waterproof cover, and absorbent inner liner, and built in closures. As the name would suggest, it is all one piece. These diapers commonly fasten with hook and loop or snap fasteners. They may also be made of wool as the outer layer. Use of All In Ones is the most similar to using disposable diapers. For parents who are cloth diapering and using daycare, this is a popular solution. click to buy

Diaper Covers

A diaper cover is made of a waterproof layer that keeps clothing dry. This can be a waterproof fabric like nylon or another fabric that has been made waterproof with a laminate. The cover should go over fitted or foldable diapers. The most used design functions just like a disposable diapers and has snaps or hook and loop closure (velcro).
A pull on cover may be used when the cloth diaper underneath also has a closure. If you purchase prefods, you will need to also purchase some type of fastener to keep everything in place when using a pull on cover. click to buy

How many covers do I need?

We recommend purchasing 6-8 diaper covers for a newborn, 4-6 diaper covers for an older baby and 2-3 diaper covers for a toddler.

I'm buying pocket diapers or all-in-ones. Do I need a diaper cover?

A diaper cover is not necesary if you are using All-In-Ones or Pocket Diapers.

Fitted Diapers

A fitted diaper has elastic at the legs and at the waist. It also has some type of closure, hook and loop or snaps. A fitted diaper requires a cover to keep moisture in. The absorbency varies based on the materials used in the construction of the diaper. Cotton is all-natural, biodegradable, and inexpensive. Hemp fitteds are more expensive but also more absorbent.

Some fitted diapers are flat, wth elastic and closure added only to fit baby better. Soakers or doublers are added inside this to provide extra absorbency. click to buy

Soakers or doublers can also be sewn into the fitted diaper. Extras can be added as needed.

Flushable Liners

These are liners that go inside of the diaper. They are meant to make for easier disposal of solid waste. You simply throw the whole thing in the toilet and flush away. Ideally, this means less cleanup and less contact with the waste.

Prefolds aka Chinese Prefolds

A prefold (thicker in the middle than it is on the sides) cloth diaper is a flat that has been pre-folded and sewn permanently. They come in two colors, white and unbleached. The unbleached diapers have not been whitened. What this means is that they come with many of the original cotton oils still in the fabric and may require repeat washings to make them absorbent. When they are ready, they are known for being softer than diapers that have been bleached. Quality differences affect the usability of this style. Some products commonly sold in the mass market stores are made with cheaper cotton, fewer layers of fabric or even a filler product that isn't even absorbent (some have synthetic fibers like stuffing in a pillow) as the thicker middle layer. Note: we only sell high quality prefolds that can withstand daily use and have no non absorbent materials

Pockets

Pockets are similar to an AIO and are generally considered and All-In-One. The absorbent liner is not permanently attached. Instead there is a pocket which is stuffed with inserts to absorb. Additional inserts can be added for extra absorbency. Pros: they dry faster and are more customizable. Cons: You have to remove inserts for laundering and re-stuff them. These are a very popular option! click to buy

Flats

These are cloth diapers that are similar to prefolds but they are exactly that, not pre-folded. These can be folded into more shapes and sizes depending on your needs. Bigger babies, my own included, do not fit well even into toddler size prefolds. Special folds can be done with flats that can accommodate them. These also dry much faster as they are thinner.

Soakers aka Doublers aka Inserts

These are absorbent pads made of fabric that can be sewin into a cloth diaper or added to it. They can be any cotton fabric, terricloth, hemp, or anything else. A certain number of layers are cut to size and sewn together. click to buy

Accessories

There are an assortment of accessories are available with cloth diapers. Some that are non-negotiable are:

You can use plastic bags but these really are more economical and more eco friendly. These are waterproof bags used for storing dirty diapers between wearing and washing. The wet bag is smaller and meant to travel with you. Both are made washable so they can be thrown in with the diapers that need washing.
Otherwise there are inserts that can be added to diapers for extra absorbency, cloth wipes (can also be washed along with diapers), and handy sprayers. The sprayers are specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning dirty diapers at the toilet. They attach to the plumging in the back of the toilet so you can spray them right there, NO MORE DUNKING!
